About us

ARTIVES (city tales: an art-based participatory framework for studying migration-related diversity) is a research project funded by the European Research Council (ERC) during 2024-2029. Its goal is to study imaginaries of diversity portrayed by artists in Lisbon and Rotterdam in their films, performances and (oral) literature. Topics explored include migration histories, navigating dynamics of ‘local’ vs. ‘foreign’ and transnational networks of belonging. The project will study artistic practices and stories by authors with affective ties to Angolan and Mozambican communities in Lisbon; Surinamese and (Dutch) Caribbean communities in Rotterdam; and Cabo Verdean communities in both cities.

ARTIVES is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) (Grant agreement ID: 101117068) to further our understanding of the potential of literature, theatre, and audio-visual narratives to imagine and relate to urban diversity in nuanced and inclusive ways.

LUCAS

The project is coordinated by the Netherlands at the Leiden University Center for the Arts in Society, a multidisciplinary institute dedicated to the study of the multifaceted relationships between arts and society.

CLEPUL

In Portugal, we are hosted at the Center for Lusophone and European Literatures and Cultures of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Lisbon, which promotes innovative research in literatures and cultures in the Portuguese language.

ARTIVES

Embedding ARTIVES in these two research institutions allows our team to closely engage with cultural scenes in Lisbon and Rotterdam and ensure productive collaborations with local artists and cultural and archival institutions.
